Arunagirināthar

The life history of Arunagirināthar has a deep impact on me. Every time I watch his biopic (tamizh movie), it gives me chills. An inspiring personality, Sammandham Pillai (Vadapazhani Thiruppugazh Sabha), encouraged me, in my college days, to look into the lyrics, the various rhythms, the sthalams and the cry of his soul, Arunagirināthar had expressed in his works. Sammandham Pillai involved me in organising the annual Thiruppugazh festival in the month of August every year (small roles), which was my initial exposure to Arunagirināthar. He would himself sing very well, but never went on stage.

During this pandamic lockdown, to spend time wisely, I sang a series of 30 Thiruppugazhs everyday. I consider myself extremely lucky to have been born in a Tamizh speaking family and hence be able to easily pronounce Arunagirinathar’s words.
